The Stade de Geneve was finished in 2003 by Zschokke Construction S.A. after nearly three years of construction. It was built for home team Servette FC, who were hoping to move from their old and much smaller Stade des Charmilles. The stadium seats 30,000, including 22 hospitality suites. Like many other modern stadiums, the Stade de Geneve is not just a stadium and includes a shopping and leisure complex, hotel and restaurants in its annex. The stadium has already proved itself in big matches. The stadium hosted international friendlies between Argentina and England on November 12 2005, which England won 3-2 and between New Zealand and Brazil on June 4, 2006, which Brazil won 4-0.

Local team Servette FC were founded in 1890 and have a rich history, having won 17 Swiss league Championships and seven Swiss cups. Servette FC also reached the quarter-finals of the European Cup Winner’s Cup in the 1978-1979 season. Famous players such as Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos and German Oliver Neuville have played for the club.

The stadium was also used for rugby union , with a 2006-07 Heineken Cup clash between Bourgoin and Munster being moved from Bourgoin’s home ground .

Current day Geneva has a reputation for being an international jet-setting city and is, as a result, a more modern city than many other in Switzerland. One of the city’s main festivals the FĂȘte de la Musique, a festival hosting music from all genres is held in June, and will coincide with the European Championships, giving football fans the chance to experience a wide range of music as well as some fantastic football action.
